FREE to local authorities… earns schools free environmental educational rewards.
RATS is a new primary school waste minimisation project.
It is a fun and relevant project, based on the experience of developing the Happy Bin, using teamwork, inter school cooperation and friendly competition to reduce waste.
· Develop an understanding of local and global environmental issues;
· Explore ways to reduce both waste and their school’s carbon footprint;
· Change their attitudes to waste;
· Earn their school environmental educational rewards by recycling Mobile Phones, Ink Jet Cartridges & Toners, and similar products.
RATS is designed to be used in clusters of schools and is ideal for local authorities wanting to promote a waste minimisation message in their area.
A free after school training session for teachers from participating schools can be provided.
What's in the RATS project?
The RATS project consists of a complete pack of activities to reduce waste in a primary school supplied on a CD Rom.
The fun activities are presented by a cartoon rat with a deep interest in rubbish!
The pack includes:
A Training PowerPoint, consisting of an instructive staff quiz, to be used in a professional development session, to explain why the project is needed and how it works;
A set of 12 ICT based activities to be used over a half term period. Six of the activities can be used in a whole school "assembly" session, the others can be differentiated and used in classrooms as part of the daily curriculum;
A weekly waste monitoring exercise. The weekly weight of waste produced by the school is monitored and entered on this website. Graphs display the school's performance in waste reduction and compare the progress with other schools that are taking part in the project. This comparison is a good incentive to reduce waste;
A Waste Awareness Family Quiz. This is designed to be used as an informative, fund raising event with children and their families at the end of the project. It also helps send the waste minimisation message home!
How do schools earn environmental educational rewards?
At the outset of the RATS project schools are asked to register with Reciproc8 Recycling and set up a recycling scheme for the collection of mobile phones, ink jet cartridges, toners and similar products. Reciproc8 points are awarded for the recycled items collected and points can be redeemed against a range of educational experiences and products for schools in the Reciproc8 Rewards Range.
Please look at www.reciproc8.co.uk for details.
If you are interested in either a local authority or school joining the project please phone or email Ian Mitchell for details.
